Fontilles Sanatorium

Old stone building

The first leprosy patients were admitted to Fontilles sanatorium in 1909. A two mile wall was constructed around it to prevent patients from escaping and help control the spread of leprosy (#). There were still leprosy patients living at the sanatorium when I visited in 2008.
